Downtown Revitalization Project

In Downtown Chico, walking and biking are difficult and unsafe for many people. Main Street and Broadway Street, two major roads, have a lot of car traffic and do not have bike lanes or enough sidewalks. Since 2012, there have been 112 accidents in the area, including two deadly crashes. There is also no easy way for people to walk or bike between Bidwell Park and downtown. People living in the area have trouble getting to shops or work without a car, and the street crossings are unsafe and uninviting.

The Downtown Revitalization Project aims to make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, and use other forms of transportation. This project will fill in gaps, create bike lanes, and improve pedestrian paths. The goal is to make the community more connected and encourage people to choose walking, biking, and transit, while also helping meet air quality goals.

Upcoming Design Features

The Downtown Revitalization Project will explore various ways to improve biking and walking, considering the available space and needs of the area. The design will include:

  • Better Sidewalks: Improvements to sidewalks to make walking more pleasant and safe.

  • Community-Inspired Design: Designs that reflect the city’s unique character, developed through input from residents and businesses.

  • Preserving Parking: Choosing locations and features that reduce the loss of parking spaces.

  • Flex Parking Zones: Special parking spots that can be used for loading and pick-up/drop-off areas when not in use for deliveries.

  • Wayfinding: Signs to help people find local places and transportation options.

  • Trash Disposal Areas: Well-designed areas for commercial trash bins ("corrals") that balance efficiency and fit the downtown area.

Project Outreach

  1. Stakeholder Advisory Committee: A group of local experts and community members will meet six times to share insights and feedback about the project.

  2. Online Survey: An online survey will be available to gather input on where people want to bike or walk and any safety concerns. It will be promoted through city channels and community organizations.

  3.  Community Open Houses: There will be six in-person workshops where the public can learn about the project, share their ideas, and provide feedback on proposed designs.

  4. Pop-Up Events: Six interactive pop-up events will be held at local events, markets, and popular spots around Chico. These will feature displays and activities to engage the community and gather valuable feedback.

Project Location

This project will connect the new bike path being built on Esplanade to the existing bike lanes on Park Avenue. It will cover the area from the intersection of Memorial Way in the south to West 11th Street in the north, with the eastern boundary extending to Salem Street.
